BIOGRAPHY
Dr Jürgen Stark served on the European Central Bank’s (ECB) Executive Board from 2006 to 2011. Here, he was responsible for economics and monetary analysis and was known informally as the the bank’s “chief economist”.
An inflation ‘hawk’, Jürgen resigned from his ECB role in protest at the bank’s controversial bond-buying programme, which it had implemented in response to the eurozone crisis.
Jürgen was a key figure in the European project, including the negotiation of the Maastricht Treaty and subsequent Stability and Growth Pact.
He served as Deputy Finance Minister of Germany from 1995 to 1998, and as Deputy Governor of the German Bundesbank from 1998 to 2006, including as acting Governor in 2004.
