Max Tegmark is professor of Physics at MIT, and a renowned keynote speaker on AI.
His internationally best-selling book Life 3.0: Being Human In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, examines how AI has the power to transform our world, from healthcare and work to warfare and the dispensation of justice.
However, it is also intended as a wake-up call. AI has the power to make humanity more prosperous than ever before. But in the wrong hands, or allowed to run out of control, it has the power to create great suffering or even obliterate the human race.
This is what leads Max to believe that AI will either be the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. It is therefore critical that governments, businesses, NGOs and private individuals educate themselves and come together to think long-term about how AI can be harnessed for good.
Max discussed these ideas, and more, when he recently appeared as a guest on the Tech Seeking Human podcast (see also opposite).
I’m always struck by Max’s optimism and faith in people’s power to do good. It is this, I think, that makes him such an engaging and inspiring speaker on what is, put bluntly, in many ways a very scary topic. We must hope that enough people follow his lead and that his faith isn’t misplaced.
