BIOGRAPHY

Born in Sweden, Max Tegmark first received his B.A in Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics followed by his M.Sc in Engineering Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology.

In 2003, after working at the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant professor, Max Tegmark achieved tenure before joining MIT in 2004.

Max Tegmark is Professor in the Department of Physics at MIT and the best-selling author of Life 3.0: Being Human In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence (2017).

Known for his unorthodox ideas and passion for adventure, Max’s scientific interests range from precision cosmology to the ultimate nature of reality, which he explored in his popular book Our Mathematical Universe: my quest for the ultimate nature of reality (2014).

He has published more than two hundred technical papers and has featured in dozens of science documentaries. His work with the SDSS collaboration on galaxy clustering shared the first prize in Science magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year: 2003.”

Max Tegmark is founder (with Anthony Aguirre) of the Foundational Questions Institute, an organisation that provides grants to catalyse, support, and disseminate research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology.

MAX TEGMARK: KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Max’s energy and passion for the biggest questions facing humanity leap from the pages of his best-selling books. It’s an infectious enthusiasm that also comes across in his energetic, witty and thought-provoking talks.

His aim is not only to help us understand the dangers presented by A.I., but also its positive potential. In his own words…

“I’m fascinated by A.I. and the the future of life. There’s been much talk about A.I. disrupting the job market and enabling new weapons, but very few scientists talk seriously about the elephant in the room: what will happen once machines outsmart us at all tasks? That’s why I wrote [Life 3.0], to help you join the most important conversation of our time.”
